David von Oheimb's Photo Gallery: Marsa Alam & Luxor, Egypt

When we were looking on short notice for a sunny and inexpensive vacation for a couple of days during the European mid-winter, I got reminded of a recommendation of relatives who have been spending two weeks in Marsa Alam for several years in a row. This place, at the shore of Red Sea in south-eastern Egypt, is ideal for sun-bathing and snorkelling nearly year-round. From that part of Egypt, both Luxor and the Assuan Dam are about a five-hours drive away.

These days, most tourists are deterred from going to Egypt due to exaggerated stories about terror hazards. Those who still visit the Marsa Alam area, which is rather quiet (as compared to Hurghada) anyway, are awarded with sparsely filled beaches and hotels at excellent rates. While enjoying warm hospitality, they help alleviating the economic suffering of the folks living there in particular during recent politically rather unstable years.
